This week, Google elevated Hassabis to Chief Scientist of Alphabet and Chair of Google DeepMind, freeing him from day-to-day management to focus on the company’s long-term artificial intelligence strategy and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI). He will also continue leading Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind. Hassabis has repeatedly transformed the field of AI. Under his leadership, DeepMind’s AlphaGo defeated world champion Lee Sedol in 2016, achieving what many experts believed was still decades away. The company later revolutionized biology with AlphaFold, an AI system capable of predicting the three-dimensional structures of proteins with unprecedented accuracy—a breakthrough that accelerated biomedical research worldwide.
For that achievement, Hassabis shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, recognizing AI not simply as a computing technology but as a transformative scientific tool with profound implications for medicine and the life sciences.
Today, through Isomorphic Labs, Hassabis is applying AI to one of humanity’s biggest challenges: dramatically accelerating the discovery of new medicines. His appointment as Alphabet’s Chief Scientist cements his position as one of the world’s most influential figures shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
