The Nobel Laureate Leading Artificial Intelligence
No figure better symbolizes the Greek contribution to AI than Sir Demis Hassabis. Born in London to a Greek Cypriot father, Hassabis founded Google DeepMind, arguably the world’s most influential artificial intelligence laboratory.
DeepMind changed AI forever. Its AlphaGo program defeated the world’s best Go player in 2016—an achievement once considered decades away—before the company revolutionized biology with AlphaFold, an AI system capable of predicting the three-dimensional structure of proteins with remarkable accuracy.

Among the leaders of that transformation is Manolis Kellis, Professor at MIT and Director of the Computational Biology Group at the Broad Institute.

Beyond mentoring young scientists, the organization seeks to strengthen collaboration between Greece and the global AI ecosystem.
From Research to Industry
Greek influence extends beyond academia.
One of the most influential technology executives in artificial intelligence is John Giannandrea, the Scottish-born executive of Greek ancestry who heads Apple’s machine learning and AI strategy.
Before joining Apple in 2018, Giannandrea led Google’s artificial intelligence division, overseeing many of the company’s most important advances in search, language processing, and machine learning. At Apple, he now plays a central role in developing Apple Intelligence, Siri, and the company’s broader AI strategy.
The commercial ecosystem is also supported by entrepreneurs and investors of Greek heritage who are helping transform AI research into real-world products. While fewer Greek-founded AI “unicorns” have emerged than in the United States or Britain, an expanding network of founders, venture capitalists, and technology executives is helping bring AI innovation to market and strengthening Greece’s presence in the global technology economy.
A Disproportionate Influence
Greece is home to fewer than 11 million people, yet scientists of Greek and Greek Cypriot descent occupy leading positions at many of the institutions shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
Their work spans nearly every branch of the field: reinforcement learning, computer vision, robotics, theoretical machine learning, cloud computing, AI hardware, computational biology, archaeology, and autonomous systems.
Some are creating the mathematical foundations of AI. Others are building the infrastructure that powers it. Still others are using artificial intelligence to decode ancient inscriptions, discover new medicines, or make autonomous systems safer.
Together, they demonstrate that while Greece may not be an AI superpower in terms of investment or industrial scale, Greek minds have become an indispensable part of one of humanity’s greatest technological revolutions.
