The summer of high-profile Greek transfers across Europe shows no signs of slowing down. Just days after Christos Tzolis finalized his blockbuster move to Arsenal, another major deal involving Greek talent has come to fruition. Konstantinos Karetsas is set to don the iconic black-and-yellow jersey of Borussia Dortmund, with the German giants sealing a blockbuster deal on Monday (July 27) that could reach up to €41 million ($46.5 million) in total.
The latest developments in negotiations between the Westphalians and Genk led to a final agreement. Dortmund remained resolute in their pursuit of the 19-year-old attacking midfielder, and following a fresh trip by club executives to Belgium, they successfully unlocked negotiations with Genk’s board.
Dortmund raised its base offer to €38 million (about $43.2 million), with an additional €3 million ($3.4 million) in performance-based add-ons, prompting both clubs to shake hands on the deal. The Westphalians had initially aimed to wrap up the transfer before departing for their pre-season tour of Japan. Although that deadline passed, the German side refused to back down. Dortmund Sporting Director Ole Book stayed behind in Belgium to personally spearhead the critical talks and guide negotiations across the finish line.
Meanwhile, Karetsas has agreed to personal terms on a five-year contract, reportedly fully sold on the sporting project presented to him. Only formalities remain while the international playmaker is preparing to fly to Germany immediately for his medical tests to join his new teammates in pre-season training.
Walking in the footsteps of a rich legacy
Karetsas’ move to Borussia Dortmund is more than just another expensive transfer. It continues a multi-decade tradition of Greek players making their mark on German football.
The Bundesliga has historically proven to be an ideal stage for Greek talent. - Sokratis Papastathopoulos: A standout figure in Dortmund’s recent history, serving as a cornerstone of BVB’s defense from 2013 to 2018. He lifted two German Supercups, featured in a Champions League final, and established himself as one of the league’s top center-backs.
- Kyriakos Papadopoulos & Kostas Stafylidis: Papadopoulos made his mark early at Schalke before spells at Leverkusen and Hamburg (crossing 150 Bundesliga appearances), while Stafylidis built a sustained top-flight career representing four different clubs.
In recent years, players such as Panagiotis Retsos, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Dimitris Giannoulis, and Konstantinos Koulierakis have maintained that strong pipeline, setting the stage for Karetsas to write the next chapter.
