The Greek government has withdrawn the Greek Boxing Federation’s official sports recognition, a move that strips the governing body of its legal status under Greek sports law following an inspection that found serious administrative shortcomings.

The decision was issued by the General Secretariat of Sports after inspectors concluded that the federation had failed to comply with statutory requirements governing the maintenance and certification of official records. According to the government’s decision, the findings were based on an inspection carried out by a three-member committee following an on-site visit to the federation’s offices.

The withdrawal of recognition marks one of the most significant interventions in the administration of amateur boxing in Greece in recent years.

What the government found

Under Greece’s sports legislation, national sports federations must maintain a series of certified records documenting their governance and operations, including minutes of general assemblies, board meetings, membership registers, accounting books, and official correspondence.

According to the inspection, the Hellenic Boxing Federation failed to meet several of those legal obligations. The General Secretariat of Sports concluded that the deficiencies justified revoking the federation’s “special sports recognition,” the legal status required for a federation to operate officially under Greek law.

The government’s decision is based on administrative compliance rather than a criminal finding.

Broader scrutiny of the Greek Boxing federation

The action comes amid broader scrutiny of the federation’s management following previous audit findings that prompted increased oversight by sports authorities.

Although media reports have linked the decision to earlier financial audit findings, the revocation itself cites failures to comply with statutory governance requirements identified during the official inspection rather than allegations of financial misconduct..

What the decision means about boxing in Greece

Official sports recognition is a prerequisite for a federation to function as the governing body of a sport in Greece. Without it, the federation’s legal standing within the country’s sports framework is fundamentally affected, raising questions about the administration of domestic boxing competitions and future governance of the sport.

It remains unclear what immediate measures the Ministry of Sports will take to ensure continuity for athletes, clubs, and competitions, or whether the federation intends to challenge the decision through administrative or judicial channels.
