Athens has launched Parkout, a free app designed to show user-reported parking availability across parts of the Greek capital. The app allows motorists preparing to leave a parking spot to alert nearby users.

Those searching in the area can then see the reported location and move toward it. The Municipality of Athens introduced the system through DAEM, the city’s digital services company.

Unlike sensor-based parking systems, Parkout does not use new street infrastructure. Instead, it depends on public participation, with users sharing updates before leaving a space.

How Parkout Works in Athens

Parkout is available free of charge for Android and iOS devices and can also be accessed through letsparkout.com.

When motorists prepare to leave, they mark their location on the app. Other users nearby then receive an update and can head toward the reported space.

City officials say the service seeks to reduce the time spent circling streets, a common source of congestion in many Athens neighborhoods.

According to the municipality, shorter searches may also reduce unnecessary fuel use and emissions linked to vehicles driving around for a spot.

Which Athens neighborhoods are covered by parking app

Parkout operates in areas of Athens outside the city’s controlled parking system.

These include Patissia, Ano Patissia, Agios Eleftherios, Sepolia, Kolonos, Votanikos, Eleonas, Kypseli, Ano Kypseli, Gyzi, Polygono, Ampelokipi, Goudi, Pangrati, Neos Kosmos, and Ano and Kato Petralona.

The app also covers Promponas, Rizoupoli, Akadimia Platonos, Rouf, Attiki Square, Amerikis Square, Pedion tou Areos–Evelpidon, Zappeion, the Stadium area, Gouva, Dourgouti, and the area around the First Cemetery of Athens.

It does not operate in parts of the city where controlled parking rules already apply. These include Monastiraki, Plaka, Acropolis, Makrygianni, Koukaki, Exarchia, Neapoli, Kolonaki, Ilisia, Lycabettus, and Kountouriotika.

Success depends on public participation

The app’s effectiveness will depend largely on consistent use. Since Parkout relies on motorists reporting spaces before leaving, its value increases as more people take part.

Athens officials have presented the initiative as part of a wider effort to use digital services for everyday urban issues. Parking remains one of the most persistent challenges in the Greek capital, especially in densely populated neighborhoods where demand often exceeds available space.

Parkout’s driver-reported model makes it easier to deploy than systems requiring sensors, cameras, or other street-level equipment. However, its impact will depend on regular use by motorists willing to share updates before they leave.
