A flight departing from Mykonos was delayed for more than three hours after police removed a group of young passengers from the aircraft following a disturbance on board.
The incident took place at Mykonos airport as passengers of the Volotea flight traveling to Napoli, Italy were preparing to leave the island, one of Greece’s busiest summer destinations. The disruption began after several young travelers allegedly refused to follow crew instructions while on the plane according to website Mykonos Live TV.
Police remove unruly passengers from Mykonos flight
Police were called to the aircraft, and officers escorted the passengers off before departure. The removal caused a lengthy delay, with the flight eventually leaving more than three hours behind schedule.
Greek authorities have not released extensive public details about the incident or whether charges were filed.
The episode unfolded during the peak summer travel season, when Mykonos sees heavy air traffic as thousands of visitors arrive on and depart from the Cycladic island. The airport, which serves both domestic and international routes, often operates under intense pressure in July and August.
A broader concern for airlines
Incidents involving unruly passengers have become a broader concern for airlines and airport authorities across Europe and beyond, particularly during high-demand travel periods. Such cases can lead to major operational disruptions, including delayed departures, missed connections, and added security procedures.
In Greece, tourism is a key part of the economy, and islands such as Mykonos are among the country’s most internationally recognized destinations. Any disturbance affecting flights during the summer can quickly have wider consequences for travelers, airlines, and airport operations.
Cabin crews are trained to report behavior that may compromise safety or prevent a flight from departing normally. Under standard aviation procedures, passengers who fail to comply with instructions can be removed if the captain or security personnel determine that their presence poses a problem for the flight.
Mykonos, known worldwide for its beaches and nightlife, attracts large numbers of young visitors every year. During the summer season, authorities on the island often face increased pressure linked to crowd management, transport demand, and public order.
No further official announcement had been issued on the case at the time of reporting.
