Shocking details have emerged following a devastating fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon in a two-story house at the intersection of Aristeidou and Agion Panton streets in Kallithea, Athens.

The blaze reportedly started on the ground floor while the residents, an 80-year-old man and his 75-year-old wife, were napping. While the 80-year-old husband managed to escape through a back door by the garage, his wife became trapped. Terrified, she retreated to the balcony as flames shattered the windows, cutting off any internal escape routes.

“Grandma, jump!” — A heroic intervention

As a crowd gathered helplessly on the street below listening to the woman’s desperate cries for help, a passing delivery driver noticed the danger, abandoned his motorcycle, and rushed toward the building.

Speaking to Alpha TV, the driver described the tense, life-or-death moment:

“She was screaming for help, and the house was entirely engulfed in flames. There were many people watching, but no one was moving to help. Another young man next to me was shouting, ‘Grandma, jump!’ I saw the fire right above her head—she was going to burn. I yelled up to her, ‘Grandma, jump! I will catch you!’ She asked, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure?’ I told her to jump, and she did.”

The driver and a few nearby bystanders managed to break her 5-meter (approx. 16-foot) fall. “We caught her, and we all crashed to the ground together. She was bruised a bit, but the important thing is that we saved a human life,” he added.

Casualties and injuries

The 75-year-old woman, though deeply traumatized and in shock, survived the drop. She was transported to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, while her husband was treated for a leg injury.

The fire department responded heavily to the scene to contain the blaze. The operation took a toll on the first responders as well; two firefighters sustained burns during the rescue efforts and were transported to the 251 Air Force General Hospital.

Expressing his gratitude, the heroic delivery driver added, “I want to deeply thank the Kallithea firefighters who arrived at the scene. They fought incredibly hard.”
