According to the Athens News Agency, the siblings had been living in the container for 30 years. It had originally been provided to them as temporary housing following a major earthquake in Konitsa three decades ago. The container was situated on their own plot of land, located near the town’s historic Konitsa Bridge.
Local neighbors revealed that the elderly siblings lived under grueling conditions without electricity, and frequently battled chronic health issues. Due to the lack of power, investigators are currently looking into whether the fire was sparked by a candle or an oil lamp used for light.
Local media reports note that Social Welfare services had previously intervened in the past to help clean and maintain the container.
A team of 10 firefighters with five engines responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze. The Fire Service’s arson and investigation unit is currently working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
