Giannis Antetokounmpo spent Saturday, June 20, helping prepare and serve meals at a community kitchen, a volunteer-run meal program that supports people facing hardship, in Athens. He was joined by his brother Thanasis, his mother, and other members of his family.

The Greek NBA star and his family visited Anthropon Gevmata (“Meals for People.”), a Kolonos-based community meal program. The Municipality of Athens and the nonprofit organization Equal Society run the initiative, which brings together municipal services, volunteers, and nonprofit workers to support vulnerable residents.

Working alongside the kitchen’s cook and volunteers, the Antetokounmpo family helped prepare meals before personally serving portions to people who rely on the program.

The visit highlighted the daily work behind the program, which provides prepared meals to people experiencing poverty, social exclusion, or other forms of hardship.

For Antetokounmpo, Kolonos is also personally meaningful. The Athens neighborhood is not far from where he spent much of his early years in Greece before his rise from local basketball courts to NBA stardom.

A major NBA report in the background

The community visit came as Antetokounmpo’s NBA future was making international headlines. According to ESPN, the Milwaukee Bucks are trading their franchise icon to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal that would end his long tenure in Milwaukee.

Before the news emerged, Antetokounmpo shared a reflective message on Instagram, writing: “GOD, I trusted you at the beginning, and I will continue to trust you throughout.” Miami is reportedly sending Milwaukee a major package of players and future picks to secure the 31-year-old superstar, while also bringing back veteran forward Bobby Portis.

The Boston Celtics made a late push with an offer centered on Jaylen Brown and two first-round selections, but Milwaukee ultimately favored Miami’s younger talent and long-term draft assets.

The reported move would pair Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo and give Miami one of the NBA’s strongest defensive frontcourts. The teams cannot officially complete the deal until July 6, allowing enough time to potentially involve a third franchise.
