Greece is bracing for a hotter-than-normal and exceptionally dry summer, according to seasonal forecasts from major international meteorological agencies.

Prolonged periods of extreme heat and severely restricted rainfall are projected to dominate the landscape through July and August.

The atmospheric shift solidified during the latter half of June, as weather patterns over the Eastern Mediterranean fell under the stranglehold of the African subtropical anticyclone. This high-pressure system has moved into the region with increasing frequency in recent years, establishing itself as the primary driver of the region’s intensifying summer extremes.

Western Europe sweats under extreme heat

This localized spike is part of a broader, more dangerous climate pattern presently suffocating much of the European continent. France and Western Europe are currently being battered by a historic, early-season heatwave that has shattered local temperature records and triggered emergency responses across multiple nations.

Fueled by a massive plume of hot air pulled directly from the Sahara, temperatures in southern and central France have repeatedly breached the 40-degree Celsius mark, forcing authorities to issue red alerts for vulnerable populations and strain the region’s energy grids.

This relentless heatwave in Western Europe serves as a stark preview of the atmospheric gridlock threatening the rest of the continent. British and French forecasting models indicate an alarming likelihood of persistent “Omega block” patterns—highly stable high-pressure systems shaped like the Greek letter Omega that stall over large landmasses. These blocks effectively trap scorching air in place for weeks, aggravating drought conditions and elevating the risk of explosive wildfires from Spain all the way to the Balkans.

July and August outlook for Greece

Data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) indicate that temperatures throughout July and August will consistently hover well above historical averages across most of Greece.

Key areas of concern

  • Highest Temperature Anomalies: Thessaly, eastern Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and the eastern Aegean islands are projected to bear the brunt of the heat.
  • Sahara Air Plumes: Repeated intrusions of warm air masses from North Africa are expected to trigger extended heatwaves, pushing local mercury levels past 40°C.
  • “Tropical Nights”: Meteorologists warn of an uptick in nocturnal heat, with nighttime temperatures failing to drop below 20°C or even 25°C, preventing critical cooling relief for urban areas.

While seasonal models project below-average rainfall for the vast majority of the country, localized relief may arrive in the form of volatile afternoon thunderstorms. These are most likely to impact the mountainous terrain of the Pindus range, western and northern Greece, and parts of Macedonia and Epirus, though they carry the secondary risk of dry lightning.
