Greece Wraps Up Balkan Athletics Championships With 39 Medals, Including 11 Golds

Greece completed a strong two-day showing at the Balkan Athletics Championships in Volos, finishing with 39 medals, including 11 golds.

The host nation’s final tally stood at 11 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze medals, with results spread across track, field and relay events. Greece added five golds, eight silvers and six bronzes on the second day alone.

Turkey topped the gold-medal table with 13 titles, but Greece’s overall haul confirmed one of the standout team performances of the championships.

Greece’s Dimitris Tsiamis claims triple jump bronze medal at Balkan Championships

Dimitris Tsiamis once again delivered for Greece in the men’s triple jump, adding a bronze medal to the country’s total.

The 44-year-old opened with a jump of 16.15 meters, with a wind reading of +0.7. His second attempt was also beyond the 16-meter mark but was ruled a foul. Tsiamis then improved on his third attempt, reaching 16.18 meters with a +1.3 wind reading.

Having achieved the mark he had targeted before the competition, the veteran Greek jumper chose to pass his final three attempts. The result gave him bronze and placed him on the Balkan Championships podium for the fifth time in his career.

Turkey’s Can Özüpek won the event with a jump of 16.46 meters.

Balla takes bronze in women’s 5,000 meters

Greece also reached the podium in the women’s 5,000 meters, where Ntenisa Balla claimed bronze with a season-best time of 16:32.05.

Her performance added another distance-running medal to Greece’s tally. Eirini Tsoupaki also produced a strong race, finishing fourth in 16:53.56.

The title went to Turkey’s Edibe Yağız, who won gold in 16:17.50.

Women’s 4×400 relay wins silver

The Greek women’s 4×400-meter relay team added a silver medal to the country’s closing total.

Rafaelia Giannoulidou, Ioulianna Roussou, Katerina Grigoriadou and Anastasia Rapti combined for a time of 3:38.05, securing second place in one of the final events of the championships.

In the men’s 4×400 meters, Greece finished fourth. Spyros Giannis Konidaris, Vangelis Kaikis, Kyriakos Tsikilis and Giannis Simoni completed the race in 3:09.88.
