Greece’s Ambassador to the US, Antonis Alexandridis, met with U.S. Senator Rick Scott of Florida for talks focused on the close cooperation between Greece and the United States, with defense ties and current regional developments high on the agenda.

Scott, a Republican member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the Senate Armed Services Committee, discussed with Alexandridis the steady expansion of the strategic relationship between Athens and Washington. The meeting highlighted the importance both countries place on security cooperation at a time of heightened geopolitical challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeastern Europe, and the wider region.

According to the Greek Embassy in Washington, the discussion focused on the steadfast cooperation between Greece and the United States, including in defense, as well as ongoing developments in the region.

Congress pushes US and Greece defense cooperation forward

The meeting comes as Congress has shown renewed interest in strengthening US and Greece defense ties. In May, the House Foreign Affairs Committee advanced the bipartisan U.S.-Greece Defense Cooperation Advancement Act, a bill that would reauthorize International Military Education and Training assistance to Greece for five years. The measure still requires further congressional action before becoming law.

The bill aims to deepen military training, cooperation, and interoperability between the U.S. and Greek armed forces. Its sponsors, members of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, have framed Greece as a reliable NATO ally and a key partner for regional security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Under the proposed legislation, IMET assistance would support the training of future Greek military leaders, strengthen professional ties between U.S. and Greek officers, and improve their ability to operate together in joint missions. The initiative also reflects Washington’s broader view that defense cooperation with Greece extends beyond military equipment and facilities to long-term institutional links between the two armed forces.
