A 17-year-old girl remains in extremely critical condition after an apparent suicide attempt involving two teenage girls in Ilioupoli, an Athens suburb, where one of them lost her life.
The two girls fell from the rooftop of a six-story apartment building on Eleftheriou Venizelou Street under circumstances that are still being investigated by Greek law enforcement agents.
The surviving teenager was initially transferred to Asklepieion Hospital in Voula, where she was intubated, before doctors decided she needed specialized trauma care at KAT General Hospital.
Doctors race to stabilize teenager
The girl suffered severe injuries throughout her body and remains in critical condition. Doctors are working to stabilize her while treating multiple traumatic injuries.
She reportedly suffered severe head and brain injuries, as well as damage to her liver and lungs, along with a serious pelvic fracture.
Depression and test anxiety
A handwritten note found inside the backpack of the girl who has passed away is now part of the police investigation. According to reports, the teenager wrote about years of depression, overwhelming anxiety over Greece’s nationwide university entrance exams, known as the Panhellenic exams, and fears about her future.
In the note, she reportedly addressed her parents and said she had struggled with depression for the past three years. She also expressed fear that she would not do well on the Panhellenic exams, worrying that failure could limit her career opportunities and lead to financial insecurity.
The note reportedly ended with the teenager writing that she no longer found joy in life and was pessimistic about her future. Investigators have also reportedly recovered a diary belonging to one of the girls which authorities believe may provide further insight into their emotional state prior to the tragedy.
Greek police search for answers after 17-year-olds attempt suicide
Greek police are attempting to determine what led the two teenagers to the rooftop and whether additional factors may have contributed to the apparent joint suicide attempt. Investigators are reviewing the girls’ mobile phones and recent communications while also examining how they accessed the rooftop of the apartment building, where one of the teenagers reportedly lived.
According to witnesses, the girls had asked the building manager for the rooftop keys shortly before the incident. Police are also investigating whether the teenagers intentionally isolated themselves to prevent residents from intervening.
