Athens ranks among the most popular international destinations for US travelers during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA).
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, falls on May 25 this year and traditionally marks the unofficial start of the summer travel season in the United States. The Greek capital is among the five leading overseas choices, alongside major destinations such as Rome, Paris, London, and Vancouver.
Athens among leading Memorial Day destinations for US travelers
AAA estimates that about 45 million Americans will travel during Memorial Day, surpassing last year’s figure. The forecast includes trips of more than fifty miles from home between Thursday, May 21 and Monday, May 25.
The leading international destinations are Rome, Vancouver, Paris, London, Athens, Dublin, Barcelona, Southampton, Amsterdam, and Edinburgh. Athens’ strong ranking reflects the continued rise of Greece as a preferred destination for visitors from the United States. The US market has become one of the most vital sources of inbound tourism for Greece, with demand continuing to strengthen in recent years.
Direct flights boost travel to Greece
The expansion of direct air connections between Greece and the United States has made Athens easier to reach. Improved connectivity has strengthened the Greek capital’s role as both a city break destination and a gateway to the islands. Many US visitors begin their trip in Athens before continuing on to popular destinations in the Aegean and Ionian seas.
The city’s ancient landmarks, museums, food scene, cultural attractions, and access to coastal areas have also contributed to its appeal among long-haul travelers seeking both urban and leisure experiences.
Nearly 45 million Americans expected to travel on Memorial Day
AAA’s forecast points to one of the busiest holiday travel periods in recent years. Around 39.1 million Americans will travel by car, while 3.66 million will fly. A further 2.2 million travelers will use other modes of transport, including cruises, trains, and buses. That category increased by five percent compared with last year.
Data shows that travel demand in the United States remains strong, with international destinations such as Athens well positioned to benefit from the start of the US summer travel season.
