Kapodistrias movie is a story that shaped a nation
Kapodistrias – The Governor brings to life the extraordinary story of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of independent Greece and one of the most pivotal figures in modern European history.
A visionary diplomat and reformer, Kapodistrias rose to prominence in early 19th-century Europe before returning to lead a newly independent and deeply fragmented Greece. Tasked with building a nation in the aftermath of war, he established its first institutions and laid the foundations of the modern Greek state.
A story of sacrifice, conviction, and nation-building, the film explores the personal cost behind political courage — a man who relinquished love, wealth, and status in service of freedom.
Directed by Yannis Smaragdis (Kazantzakis, El Greco, God Loves Caviar), the film is described by the director as “a work of faith and deep love for Greece.”
A global cultural event
More than a historical drama, Kapodistrias – The Governor is a tribute to the enduring spirit, resilience, and identity of the Greek people.
