In a sobering address at the United Nations in Geneva, Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, the Holy See’s Permanent Observer, issued a stark warning: Christians remain the most persecuted religious community on the planet.
Speaking at the “Standing with Persecuted Christians” event on March 3, the Archbishop called on global governments to move beyond rhetoric and provide concrete protections for religious freedom.
The human cost in numbers
The scale of the crisis is staggering. According to reports from Christian Today, approximately 400 million Christians—or one in every seven globally—face some form of violence or repression. The year 2025 was particularly devastating; data cited by the Archbishop revealed that nearly 5,000 Christians were killed for their faith, averaging roughly 13 martyrs every single day.
“While the Church views these individuals as martyrs and witnesses to the truth, international law must recognize them as victims of grave human rights abuses,” Balestrero stated. He emphasized that the primary responsibility for safety lies with the State, which has a “duty to protect freedom of religion” and ensure accountability for those who attack believers.
Regional flashpoints
The 2026 Open Doors World Watch List further illustrates the deteriorating situation:
North Korea: Ranked as the most dangerous nation, where practicing Christianity often results in execution or life in labor camps.
Nigeria: Identified as the deadliest country, accounting for 70% of all faith-based killings of Christians globally.
Sub-Saharan Africa & Middle East: Rapidly increasing instability in Sudan, Mali, Yemen, and Syria continues to displace and endanger Christian populations.
The “quiet” persecution in the West
Archbishop Balestrero also drew attention to a shifting tide in Western societies. Beyond physical violence, he highlighted “polite persecution”—the social marginalization and legal restrictions that quietly push faith out of the public square.
In Europe alone, over 760 anti-Christian attacks on churches and individuals were recorded in 2024. Furthermore, Christian Today reports that over 2,200 legal incidents occurred where individuals faced prosecution for activities such as silent prayer or sharing biblical perspectives on social media.
The Archbishop concluded by noting that an attack on religious freedom is an attack on human dignity itself. Protecting the right to believe is not just about safeguarding a specific group, but about preserving the “bonds between people within society” and the harmony of the human family.
