A meteorite smashed through the roof of a house in western Germany after a fireball exploded in the sky and scattered fragments across a town.

The dramatic event occurred Sunday evening, March 8, when a bright meteor streaked across the sky above the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Witnesses reported a sudden flash followed by a loud atmospheric boom.

According to the European Space Agency, the fireball appeared at about 6:55 p.m. local time. The space rock burned through Earth’s atmosphere and then broke apart in a powerful explosion. The bright flash lasted roughly six seconds and was visible across a wide region.

Scientists say the intensity of the light suggests the incoming object was likely several meters wide before it disintegrated.

Explosion seen across several European countries

The fireball was visible across much of Western Europe. Thousands of people reported seeing the meteor as it streaked across the sky.

The International Meteor Organization received more than 3,000 eyewitness reports from observers in Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

Many witnesses described a glowing trail followed by a bright flash. Several people also reported hearing a loud boom moments later.

Such sounds occur when a meteor breaks apart at extremely high speed in the atmosphere. The resulting shock wave can travel long distances before reaching the ground. Camera systems monitoring the sky also captured the event.

Fireball tracked by meteor monitoring cameras

The meteor was recorded by Europe’s AllSky7 fireball network, a system of cameras designed to track bright meteors across the continent.

Researchers use these recordings to reconstruct the path of incoming space rocks and estimate where surviving fragments might land.

Initial analysis suggests the object entered Earth’s atmosphere at very high velocity before rapidly heating and breaking apart.

When meteoroids collide with the atmosphere, intense friction causes them to glow brightly. Larger objects can sometimes survive the descent and reach the ground as meteorites.

Meteorite fragments strike buildings in a German town

Fragments from the explosion are believed to have fallen near the town of Koblenz-Güls, part of the larger city of Koblenz along the Rhine River.

European Space Agency representatives reported that at least one house in the town was struck by small pieces of meteorite. Local reports later confirmed that several buildings in the area were hit by debris from the exploding space rock.

German news outlet Bild published photographs showing damage to one house’s roof. The image shows a hole roughly the size of a soccer ball. The local fire department said a rock broke through the roof and landed inside a bedroom. The room was empty at the time, and authorities confirmed that no one was injured.

Another photograph showed several small stones, each about the size of a golf ball, collected in a brown paper bag. Scientists have not yet confirmed whether these stones are genuine meteorites. Experts say laboratory tests are required to determine their origin.

Fireball meteors occur when space rocks overheat

Scientists classify the event as a fireball meteor. Fireballs occur when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere and becomes extremely hot due to friction with the surrounding air.

The intense heat causes the object to glow and sometimes fracture. When the rock breaks apart, it can produce a bright secondary flash.

Most fragments created during these explosions burn up before reaching the ground. Only a small number survive long enough to land as meteorites.

Most meteors arrive without warning

The meteor that exploded over Germany was not detected before entering Earth’s atmosphere. According to the European Space Agency, this is common. Only 11 meteoroids in history have been discovered before they struck Earth.

Researchers are now studying observations from the event to determine the meteor’s original path and identify possible locations where additional fragments may have fallen.

Meteorites rarely land in populated areas, and impacts on buildings are even more unusual. However, similar incidents have occurred in recent years, including meteorites crashing through houses in New Jersey in 2023 and British Columbia in 2021.
