The documentary “Hollywoodgate,” produced by Greek Katherine Embiricos, has been shortlisted in this year’s Documentary Feature Film Category for the 97th Oscars.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 17 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, when shortlists in ten categories for this year’s Oscars were revealed. According to the Academy, 169 films were eligible in the Documentary Feature Film Category, and 15 of them have been shortlisted, including Embiricos’ “Hollywoodgate.”
In a post on her Instagram account, Embiricos described the announcement as “absolutely surreal.”
“Thrilled to share that ‘Hollywoodgate’ has made the official shortlist for the Academy Awards Best Documentary Feature,” she wrote to her followers. “Out of 169 incredible films, we’re honored to be one of the 15 selected. Congrats to everyone who made this film happen and with so much gratitude to those who supported the journey so far.”
After thanking her “dream team,” especially the film’s Egyptian director Ibrahim Nash’at, Embiricos ends her post by saying “We all knew we were in for a wild ride. We were just convinced that . . . stories like this one deserve to be told.”
The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Who is Katherine Embiricos
According to her public profile posted on the Museum Of Cycladic Art’s website, Katherine Embiricos was raised in London and has a degree in law and an MsC in law and anthropology from the London School of Economics. She also has an MA in Global Ethics and Human Values from King’s College in London.
She has worked in communication for various organizations, including the European Central Bank, and in fundraising, having spearheaded initiatives raising over one million euros ($1,039,000) for Greek children’s charities. She now spends her time as a private investor with a focus on documentary films.
She has been actively involved with the Museum of Cycladic Art since 2015, is a member of the board of trustees of the Cycladic Art Foundation in New York, and a founding committee member of the Young Patrons program.
Recently, she attended an event at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is held every two years and aims to raise money for the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. Leonard Stern, an American billionaire businessman and lover of art, has given to the MET 162 pieces of Cycladic art from his personal collection, that have been on display at the New York museum since January. Stern has transferred ownership of the antiquities to the Greek state.
Embiricos is passionate about Greece and engaging the international community with Greek history and culture.
The gripping story of the documentary film “Hollywoodgate”
“Hollywoodgate” is a 2023 German-American documentary film, written and directed by Ibrahim Nash’at. It premiered at the 80th Venice International Film in 2023 and was released in the United States a year later.
The film was shot over a year in Afghanistan, where Nash’at follows and chronicles the daily life of Taliban air force commander Mawlawi Mansour and one of his soldiers, the fundamentalist M.J. Mukhtar, following the withdrawal of the US forces from the country.
The film has already won various awards in international documentary film competitions.
