Spyros Karatzaferis, a veteran investigative reporter, has passed away at the age of 88. The news was confirmed by his brother, former Member of Parliament and leader of the LAOS party, Georgios Karatzaferis, during a broadcast on Parapolitika 90.1 FM.
“He passed away late last night [Thursday]. It is devastating for me; as the younger brother who followed in his footsteps, I am heartbroken,” Georgios Karatzaferis stated, reflecting on his brother’s pivotal role in his own career. He described Spyros as one of the elite reporters of the last 60 years who left an indelible mark on the industry.
Veteran investigative journalist Spyros Karatzaferis’ legacy across print and broadcast media
Born in Arcadia in 1938 and raised in Athens, Spyros Karatzaferis began his career in 1959. Over six decades, he became a household name through his work at major newspapers including Vradyni, Ethnos, and Eleftherotypia.
During the Metapolitefsi (Greece’s transition to democracy), Karatzaferis distinguished himself through high-stakes investigative reporting. His exposés on classified state documents and intelligence services often triggered political firestorms, leading to high-profile legal battles.
Beyond print, Karatzaferis was a dominant figure in broadcasting, serving as News Director at Star Channel and hosting influential programs on ERT, Flash 96, and Extra Channel. He was also an accomplished publisher, founding titles such as 48 Hours, Athinaiki, and the military journal Amyntika Themata.
