Building on the momentum of their strategic partnership, India and Greece successfully concluded their inaugural Joint Services Staff Talks in New Delhi on January 14, 2026. This landmark event signals a significant deepening of military ties between the two nations, aiming to harmonize their strategic outlook across the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific.
The meeting was co-chaired by senior officials from India’s Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) and the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
Greece and India expand military engagement
The discussions focused on expanding the “scope and depth” of military-to-military engagement. Per the official statement from HQ IDS, the talks were centered on:
- Increasing the frequency of personnel exchanges to share tactical knowledge.
- Identifying mutual areas for technological and operational growth.
- Reviewing ongoing initiatives to ensure a seamless transition into more complex joint maneuvers.
The “new era” of defense relations
In a statement reflecting the gravity of the meeting, HQ IDS noted on social media:
“This engagement will herald a new era in India-Greece defence relations, marked by enhanced mutual trust and a shared commitment to regional and global security.”

The Staff Talks follow the first-ever India-Greece Maritime Security Dialogue held in Athens in December 2025. During that dialogue, representatives exchanged assessments of the maritime environment in the Mediterranean, Arctic, and Indo-Pacific. Regarding the maritime synergy, officials stated:
“The two sides conferred on ways to sustain a secure and safe maritime environment conducive to economic growth and prosperity through bilateral cooperation as well as engagement in multilateral fora.”
Recent joint military exercises
The successful execution of these talks builds on recent high-level military exercises, such as the September 2025 bilateral naval drills in the Aegean Sea involving the INS Trikand.
By bridging the security concerns of the Eastern Mediterranean with those of the Indian Ocean, India and Greece are positioning themselves as pivotal anchors of stability in an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
