The Hellenic Community of Western Australia has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to assist with the substantial financial burden facing a Greek tourist who is fighting for his life after sustaining catastrophic injuries while swimming at a Perth beach.
Ioannis (Giannis) Vidiniotis, who had travelled from Athens to Australia on holiday, was seriously injured on New Year’s Eve while swimming at Cottesloe Beach. According to available information, he struck his head forcefully on a sandbank, suffering a fractured clavicle and severe spinal injuries.
Speaking to Neos Kosmos, Community president Paul Afkos said Vidiniotis lost consciousness at the scene and was given first aid before being transported by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital. He subsequently underwent emergency spinal surgery lasting five hours in an effort to stabilize his condition.

Vidiniotis is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, where doctors expect him to remain for at least six to eight weeks. According to information provided by his family, he currently has no movement in his legs and is unable to close his hands, with treating doctors expressing serious concerns about the risk of quadriplegia due to the extent of his spinal injuries.
“The Hellenic Community is appealing to the broader community and friends to support Ioannis Vidiniotis, the 28-year-old visitor from Athens, who has suffered devastating and life-altering injuries,” Afkos told Neos Kosmos.
In a statement, the Hellenic Community of Western Australia said the severity of Vidiniotis’ injuries has placed an overwhelming financial strain on him and his family.
“The cost of prolonged intensive care, specialised medical procedures and long-term rehabilitation in Australia is immense,” the statement said. “As a community, we believe in the power of unity and solidarity in moments of unforeseen hardship.”
Funds raised through the appeal will go toward hospital and medical expenses, as well as ongoing care and long-term rehabilitation. The initial fundraising target is $250,000, with approximately $115,000 already raised.
Those wishing to contribute can do so via the GoFundMe page established by the Hellenic Community of Western Australia.
