Greek authorities have detained a 21-year-old Greek American citizen in Thessaloniki following a request from the United States as part of an investigation into an alleged online child exploitation network. The suspect was arrested earlier this week and involves allegations that the suspect played a central operational role in coordinating abuse via digital platforms. As the case progresses, US prosecutors have formally submitted an extradition request, which is currently under review by Greek courts.
Alleged role of Greek American in US-based online network
According to US authorities, the suspect occupied a key operational role in a US-based online group known as 764. Investigators allege that he helped lead the group’s core faction, commonly called 764 Inferno, which officials say was central to directing and coordinating criminal activity across digital channels.
Child exploitation allegations linked to Greek American suspect
The United States Department of Justice alleges that the network manipulated and coerced minors into committing acts of sexual abuse. Prosecutors say the abuse was recorded and distributed online alongside graphic gore and violent content, which authorities believe was used to intimidate and control victims.
US officials have described the group as a nihilistic, violent extremist network, highlighting its reliance on fear, intimidation, and ideological framing to maintain participation.
Legal challenge to extradition
Following his arrest, the suspect appeared before an appellate prosecutor in Greece, where he denied all allegations and formally objected to extradition. His legal counsel argues that he was residing in Greece during the period in question, meaning Greek courts should have jurisdiction over the case.
Under Greek law, extradition can be blocked when domestic jurisdiction applies. Greek judicial authorities have confirmed that the suspect will remain in custody until a court of appeals rules on the US request in the coming weeks.
Broader child exploitation investigation involving Greek American suspect
The case is part of a wider investigation into the same online network. In April, US authorities arrested a second individual in North Carolina in connection with the probe, highlighting what officials describe as a coordinated international effort.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi called the case one of the most severe online child exploitation operations ever encountered by federal prosecutors, saying it was built on terror, abuse, and the deliberate targeting of children. FBI Director Kash Patel added that investigators found the network operated with structured internal guidance and specified the types of abusive content members were expected to produce and share.
