Greece lost one of its most iconic journalistic figures with the sudden death of Giorgos Papadakis on Sunday, January 4th. The veteran journalist and television presenter, often referred to as the “patriarch” of Greek morning television, died at the age of 74.

According to medical reports from the Laiko Hospital in Athens, Papadakis suffered an acute myocardial infarction while in the Kolonaki district in central Athens.

Despite the immediate mobilization of emergency services and the exhaustive efforts of medical staff to perform resuscitation, he was pronounced dead shortly upon arrival to the hospital. The news has triggered a national wave of mourning, as Papadakis was a man whose voice was a fundamental part of the Greek morning routine for over three decades.

Who was Giorgos Papadakis?

Born in the Athenian suburb of Chalandri in 1951, Papadakis began his journey in journalism during a transformative era for Greek media. He first gained national recognition in the 1980s on the state broadcaster ERT, where he co-hosted the popular program Treis ston aera (Three on Air).

However, it was his move to the private network ANT1 in the early 1990s that would cement his place in Greece’s journalistic history. He launched Kalimera Ellada (Good Morning Greece), the most well-known morning news program in the country, and remained its primary host for an unprecedented 34 years.

His record-breaking presence made him the longest-serving presenter in the history of the country’s television. He only recently stepped down from his daily hosting duties on July 4, 2025, transitioning into a senior advisory and commentator role on the broadcaster’s news bulletins and shows.

Papadakis’ immense popularity across generations in Greece was a result of his unique ability to represent the concerns of the average citizen, while questioning politicians and other prominent figures of the public sphere. He was widely regarded as the voice of the people, frequently using his platform to challenge authorities on issues that directly impacted everyday life, such as pensions, healthcare, and the cost of living.

His style was characterized by a passionate, direct, and occasionally confrontational approach that resonated with a population seeking accountability from those who govern. Beyond his role as a critic of the powerful, he was also a dedicated mentor who helped launch the careers of dozens of prominent journalists working in Greece today, who grew alongside him, now presenting their own shows across the media landscape of the country.

ANT1, the broadcaster whose morning show was presented by Papadakis, issued the following statement following news of his passing:

“Giorgos Papadakis was more than just a presenter; he was a mentor, a voice for the people, and a constant point of reference. Through his direct speech, journalistic integrity, and tireless dedication, he maintained an open dialogue with society every single morning for decades. All of us at ANT1 express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Giorgos Papadakis, thank you.’’
