At least 11 people were killed and 29 others injured in Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack during a Hanukkah celebration, Australian authorities said. Police have classified the incident as a terrorist attack, triggering an extensive security operation across the area.

The violence unfolded at the northern end of Bondi Beach as members of the Jewish community gathered to mark the first night of Hanukkah. Gunfire erupted as the event was getting underway, sending people running for safety and sparking panic along one of Australia’s most heavily visited beachfronts.

Suspects neutralized as investigation expands

Following Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack, New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that one suspected attacker was shot and killed by police, while a second suspect remains in critical condition. Authorities are also investigating whether a third armed individual may have been involved.

At least 29 people were injured, including two police officers who were taken to hospital. Bomb disposal units were deployed after several suspected improvised explosive devices were discovered near the scene. Australia’s Intelligence Chief Mike Burgess said one of the suspects was previously known to authorities but had not been assessed as an immediate threat.

Bystander disarms gunman during Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack

Video footage widely shared online appears to show a civilian approaching one of the gunmen from behind and intervening as shots continued to be fired toward civilians attempting to escape Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack.

The footage shows the man restraining the attacker, forcibly taking his weapon, and briefly turning it toward him, compelling the gunman to retreat on foot before fleeing toward a second assailant who was still shooting.

After disarming the suspect, the civilian raised his hands to clearly signal to nearby police officers that he poses no threat. He then places the weapon on the ground and moves away from the scene. Authorities have not released additional information on the individual, but footage has drawn widespread attention for what appears to be a rare act of bravery.

Authorities urge public to avoid the area

Police continue to secure the area following Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack, urging the public to stay away while the investigation remains ongoing.

Television footage showed emergency responders treating victims at the scene, while videos circulating on social media captured gunfire, sirens, and crowds fleeing in panic. The office of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was closely monitoring developments and urged residents and visitors to follow official police guidance.

Israeli leaders condemn Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack

Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack, describing it as a brutal terrorist assault against Jews gathered to observe a religious holiday. Speaking in Jerusalem, he called on Australian authorities to strengthen efforts to combat antisemitism.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also expressed outrage, linking the attack to a broader rise in antisemitic violence in Australia over recent years.

Jewish community voices alarm

Leaders of Australia’s Jewish community described Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack as devastating and deeply alarming. Representatives of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry said repeated warnings about security risks had not been adequately addressed.

Alex Rivchin, a senior council official, said the scale of the violence was beyond anything previously imagined, adding that a member of his communications team was among the injured.

Rising antisemitic incidents under scrutiny

Sydney’s Bondi Beach attack comes amid heightened concern over antisemitic incidents across Australia, including vandalism and assaults targeting synagogues, community buildings, and vehicles since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.

While Australian authorities have not formally confirmed that the Jewish community was the explicit target, the timing and location of the attack have intensified calls for stronger protective measures around religious and community events nationwide.
