The completion of the Santorini Volcano Documentation and Information Center is entering its final phase, promising a unique earthquake simulation.

The new center will be housed in the restored neoclassical community building in Exo Gonia, which underwent restoration completion in 2018. The project plan involves transforming this building into a modern geological museum, utilizing advanced audiovisual applications.

The content will focus on the formation and evolution of Santorini’s volcanic activity, structured around two main themes:

  • The Minoan eruption and its historical legacy.
  • The creation of the Kameni islands—a highly visited area linked to the continuous geodynamic activity of the volcanic arc.

The new museum introduces a significant innovation with a strong educational footprint: the earthquake simulation platform. This feature, the first of its kind in the South Aegean, will offer visitors a realistic experience of seismic tremors, significantly aiding in the understanding of Santorini’s geophysical nature.

Ultimately, Santorini is gaining a vital hub for education, research, and culture that highlights the island’s enduring relationship with its volcano and enhances its overall tourism narrative.

The project was developed with the contribution of experts from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and scientists from the Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Santorini Volcano, ensuring that the final result effectively merges scientific documentation with the visitor experience in a contemporary museum setting.
