Thirty-four nations have secured a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the qualification process continued this week across multiple regions. The expanded tournament, which will feature 48 teams for the first time, is scheduled for next summer and will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
All three host nations qualify automatically, leaving additional spots available in the CONCACAF region. Seven teams remain in contention for the remaining three berths, with final results expected on Nov. 18.
Europe saw significant movement this week as several teams confirmed their spots. Norway clinched its first World Cup appearance since 1998 with a 4-1 win over Italy on Nov. 16. The result also confirmed Erling Haaland’s long-awaited debut on world soccer’s biggest stage.
Portugal also booked its place with a 9-1 win over Armenia, securing Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-setting sixth World Cup appearance. On Nov. 17, Germany defeated Slovakia 6-0, while the Netherlands earned qualification with a 4-0 victory over Lithuania.
With qualification still ongoing in some regions, FIFA has confirmed that 34 teams are officially set for the tournament. FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the significance of the expanded format, calling it a milestone in bringing more global representation to the competition.
The 2026 event marks a major increase from the 32 teams that competed in Qatar in 2022. With more matches scheduled this week, several more nations will look to join the growing list of qualified teams.
