Photos shared online showed the archbishop participating in a citizenship oath ceremony, where he recited the Oath of Allegiance, the defining act that completes the naturalization process.
In a statement following the ceremony, Archbishop Elpidophoros expressed deep gratitude to his new homeland. “With gratitude and humility, I thank this great nation for welcoming me six years ago and today, for granting me the honor of becoming an American citizen,” he wrote.
Calling the occasion one of “joy and renewed purpose,” he pledged to redouble his efforts in serving the faithful of the Greek Orthodox Church while contributing to the broader fabric of American society. Quoting the New Testament, he added, “Every good and every perfect gift is from above,” framing his citizenship as both a divine blessing and a civic responsibility.

Born in Istanbul (Constantinople) in 1967, Archbishop Elpidophoros has long been recognized as a bridge-builder between cultures and faiths. He pursued theological studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki before earning a doctorate in theology from the University of Bonn in Germany. His scholarly focus and deep spiritual grounding soon led him to a distinguished career within the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, where he served as the Metropolitan of Bursa and as Abbot of the historic Monastery of the Holy Trinity on Halki.
Appointed by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew as Archbishop of America in 2019, Elpidophoros became the spiritual leader of millions of Orthodox Christians across the US. Since his enthronement, he has emphasized unity, education, and outreach, advocating for interfaith dialogue and promoting the role of the Church in addressing social and humanitarian challenges.
