Information habits in Greece are shifting towards social media platforms and away from TV, contrary to the trend observed in the rest of Europe, according to the latest Eurobarometer study. The flash survey, conducted in June 2025, identified the six most popular sources people use to obtain information on social and political current affairs.
Greek citizens, including those in the older demographics, showed a slight but clear preference to social media platforms over television, appearing to be turning their back to the latter as their main source of information.
Only 54 percent of respondents in Greece rely on the TV for current affairs updates, while a slightly higher 56 percent use social media platforms for this purpose. Search engines, video platforms, and friends and family follow in this order, while newspapers and magazines with their digital versions come last in their preferences with a mere 34 percent.
Greeks use TV for current affairs far less than EU average
The findings for Greece stand in stark contrast to the EU average, where seven in ten citizens still get their news primarily from television, while only four in ten rely on social media platforms. The survey also shows that Greek citizens use video platforms for current affairs significantly more than the European average, with 40 percent compared to 26 percent.
Meanwhile, newspapers and magazines, including their online versions are less popular in Greece (34 percent) than in the rest of Europe (40 percent), where video platforms remain the least-used source.
Despite the growing popularity of social media platforms in Greece, half of the respondents said they do not follow any influencers or content creators, compared to 37 percent across Europe.
