The Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX) welcomed the decision by global index provider FTSE Russell to upgrade the Greek capital market from “Advanced Emerging Market” to “Developed Market” status.
This upgrade represents a major international recognition of the significant progress and structural reforms implemented in recent years at ATHEX, underscoring the growing attractiveness and stability of the Greek capital market to international investors.
FTSE Russell is a leading global index provider that manages and calculates thousands of financial market indexes. These indices are essential tools used by investment professionals worldwide to measure market performance and determine investment strategies.
The new market classification is scheduled to take effect at the opening of trading on Monday, September 21, 2026. This one-year lead time allows the global investment community a full year to prepare for the transition and for institutional funds to adjust their investment mandates.
A “landmark achievement” for the Athens Stock Exchange
Yiannos Kontopoulos, CEO of the Athens Stock Exchange Group, stated:
“The reclassification of the Athens Stock Exchange to Developed Market status by FTSE Russell is a landmark achievement. It validates our ongoing strategy to upgrade our infrastructure and services, positioning the Greek capital market alongside the world’s most established exchanges.
This development is also expected to significantly expand the pool of international investors eligible to invest in the Greek capital market, attracting substantial capital inflows from funds tracking Developed Market indices. It is a development that creates new opportunities for growth and financing for our listed companies.”
Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of National Economy and Finance, stressed that the upgrade is another strong signal regarding the dynamism and stability of the Greek economy.
“Greece is now closer to the Capital Markets Union, one of the main goals of European economic integration, proving that it has stabilized and is emerging as an attractive destination for international capital,” he said and added:
“The recent upgrade of the country’s credit rating by Moody’s, combined with today’s decision by FTSE Russell, tangibly recognizes the overall progress of the Greek economy.”
