For the first time since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Poland has directly engaged Russian military assets, shooting down several drones that violated its airspace. The Polish military command confirmed that over ten Russian drones were tracked as they crossed the border during a large-scale attack on western Ukraine.
“Some of the drones that entered our airspace were shot down. Searches and efforts to locate the potential crash sites of these objects are ongoing,” the command stated.
The incident prompted a swift response, with Polish and NATO aircraft scrambled early Wednesday morning. Prime Minister Donald Tusk is on the ground overseeing the operation. In a social media post, he confirmed that an operation related to “multiple violations of Polish airspace” was underway.
“An act of war,” said a US representative after drones were launched by Russia into Poland
The Polish military urged residents in the Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin regions to stay at home, calling the Russian drone incursions on Poland “an act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens.”
As a result of the military activity, Warsaw’s Chopin Airport closed its airspace, causing flights to be diverted. The incident drew sharp criticism from US lawmakers. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) stated that the repeated violations were a sign that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “testing our resolve,” while Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) called the attack “an act of war.”
Escalation by Russia testing Poland’s and NATO’s response
BBC described this as an escalation by Moscow, testing the West’s response. The drones didn’t merely stray into Polish airspace—they penetrated deep enough to prompt the closure of Warsaw Airport. This comes as aerial attacks on Ukraine have grown both larger and more frequent.
Russian drones have crossed Ukraine’s western border before. A Russian missile once landed in a forest without detonating. In 2022, two villagers were killed near the border, apparently after a Ukrainian air-defense system downed a missile. As a result, the Polish Air Force now scrambles whenever the threat gets close.
However, they have never shot anything down before, making this new territory for both Poland and NATO.
