After meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, August 15, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to brief him on the discussion. The two leaders agreed to meet at the White House today, Monday, August 18, in talks described as critical for the future of the war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy arrived in Washington with a delegation of top European leaders, highlighting the stakes of the discussions. The group included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb—signaling Europe’s determination to remain fully involved in shaping any settlement.

European concerns over Trump’s diplomacy in lead up to Trump-Zelenskyy meeting

Brussels has taken a cautious stance toward Trump’s sudden initiative. While EU officials welcomed Washington’s engagement, they remain wary of potential side deals with Moscow that could sideline Ukraine.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, warned that Russia shows “no intention of ending the war anytime soon” and called for increased pressure on the Kremlin.

European leaders have also emphasized that Ukraine’s security must be safeguarded  through what they describe as “ironclad commitments,” rejecting any notion that Moscow should hold a veto over Kyiv’s path toward NATO or the European Union.

Zelenskyy warns of escalation

President Zelenskyy has repeatedly cautioned that Moscow could intensify fighting ahead of any talks in order to strengthen its negotiating position. Over the weekend, he warned that “in the coming days, the Russian army may increase attacks to create more favorable political conditions.”

For Kyiv, lasting peace must not come at the cost of territorial concessions. Ukrainian officials insist that any security guarantees should avoid restrictions on their armed forces, warning that such limits could embolden further Russian aggression.

Trump’s early red lines

Just hours before the White House meeting with Zelenskyy and the European delegates, Trump posted a statement on Truth Social that set the tone for the discussions. He suggested that the Ukrainian President could “end the war with Russia almost immediately” if he wished—but only by abandoning two of Ukraine’s core objectives: recovering Crimea and joining NATO.

“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants, or he can continue the war. Remember how it started. There is no chance Crimea, given away by Obama 12 years ago without a shot fired, will be taken back, and NO NATO for Ukraine. Some things never change!!!” Trump wrote, using capital letters and multiple exclamation points in characteristic style.
