Exports of Greek yogurt from Greece nearly tripled in volume between 2014 and 2023, soaring from over 44,000 tons in 2014 to more than 127,000 tons in 2023. This growth is reflected in export value as well, which climbed from €111 million to €325 million ($128 million to $377 million) over the same period.

FAGE pioneered the Greek yogurt market, becoming the first to export to the UK in 1983. However, the current leading exporter is Kri-Kri, a company based in northern Greece.

Kri-Kri’s dairy products, primarily yogurt, accounted for the majority of its sales in 2024, with exports making up 62 percent of its total dairy sales. Italy has also replaced the UK as Greece’s top export destination for yogurt.

Kri-Kri is investing €52 million (around $60.3 million) to expand its production capacity, with the goal of more than doubling its total sales to over €500 million ($580 million) by the end of 2027.

Why is Greek yogurt so popular?

The global popularity of Greek yogurt can be attributed to several factors that appeal to modern consumers.

Firstly, Greek yogurt is known for being rich in protein, which helps people feel full longer. This makes it a popular choice for those looking for a satisfying snack or a way to support a healthy lifestyle.

Moreover, its thick, creamy texture makes it a great substitute for sour cream, mayonnaise, or even cream cheese in many recipes. It can be enjoyed on its own, with fruit, in smoothies, or as a base for dips and sauces.

As more people become health-conscious, Greek yogurt has been successfully marketed as a premium, healthy food option. It’s often highlighted as a natural source of probiotics, which are beneficial for gut health.

The combination of its unique texture, high protein content, and adaptability has made Greek yogurt a staple in kitchens and a favorite among health-conscious consumers worldwide.
