Greece has had an outstanding weekend in sports. Numerous athletes are already competing in various events or are preparing to compete. As of today, the Greek men’s water polo team is the last to reach a major achievement, as they advanced to the semifinals in their sport at the World Aquatics Championship in Singapore.
Greek men’s water polo storms to the semi-finals
Greece’s men’s national water polo team defeated Italy 17-11 earlier on Sunday, securing their spot in the semifinals.
This triumph is the latest addition to the team’s noteworthy performances, with fans hoping for an outstanding result and a medal in the coming matches.
Greece’s men’s water polo team is a global powerhouse, with the nation’s beloved team securing four bronze medals in the FINA Water Polo World League (2004, 2006, 2016, 2020) and a silver at the 1997 World Cup. The semifinals take place on Monday and Tuesday, July 21 and 22, which is when Greece will face Spain, as the Iberians won Montenegro today and progressed to the semifinals.
Greece’s women’s water polo team also advances to the semi-finals
The Greek women’s national water polo team achieved an 8-7 victory over Australia on Saturday, securing a much-needed spot in the semifinals. It was a back-and-forth match that culminated in a dramatic finish, as Australia had equalized late in the 4th quarter, but Greece scored with two seconds left to win.
This triumph brought back memories of the 2011 World Championship, when the Greek women’s national team won a gold medal. The 2011 championship took place in Shanghai, China, where Greece defeated the host nation with a score of 9-8 in a tightly contested final match.
The Greek women’s national water polo team is set to play against the United States on Monday, July 21.
More hopes and achievements for Greece this weekend
Greek athletes competed in other sports competitions this weekend. Young athletics hopeful Polyniki Emmanouilidou secured a bronze medal in the 100 meters at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Bergen. Her impressive time of 11.44 seconds earned Greece its first medal of the competition.
Bergen, Norway, is currently hosting the European U23 Championships, bringing together some of Europe’s top young track and field athletes.
As the U23 Championships conclude this Sunday, the focus of Europe’s hopefuls shifts to Skopje. Greece’s northern neighbor is hosting the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) 2025, a multi-sport event for young European athletes, which officially opens on Sunday night.
Swimmer Anna Maria Daskalaki and track and field athlete Vassilis Tagaras will proudly serve as flag bearers for Greece during this evening’s opening ceremony. The festival will showcase Europe’s rising talent across various disciplines until July 26.
Daskalaki has high hopes in the swimming pool, where she’ll compete in the freestyle events in the coming days, and Tagaras in athletics. Greece also has promising participants in other events, including in gymnastics and judo among others.
