Thousands of ecstatic fans flooded the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Sunday night for a historic performance by the legendary punk rock band Green Day. This marked the globally recognized trio’s first-ever concert on Greek soil, delivering an unforgettable experience as part of the Ejekt Festival 2025.
With a staggering 85 million records sold worldwide and five Grammy Awards to their name, Green Day, comprising Billy Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, lived up to every expectation. From the opening notes, the band plunged the audience into a frenetic rhythm, blending their most iconic anthems with surprising selections that perfectly amplified the evening’s electrifying atmosphere.

Green Day crowd in Athens spanned generations
The Olympic Stadium, or OAKA, transformed into a global rock epicenter for the night, with a loyal and vocal Greek audience singing along to every lyric.
The scene was a vibrant tapestry of Green Day history, with fans of all ages sporting t-shirts featuring various band logos, from the polygonal “Kerplunk” design to the zeppelin-adorned “Dookie.”
The crowd spanned generations from those in their thirties reminiscing about their “American Idiot” CD purchases and forty-five-year-olds recalling the ’90s pop-punk explosion to younger fans introduced to the band by their parents or even TikTok.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Ejekt Festival successfully brought the Oakland, California, trio to Athens, fulfilling a long-awaited dream for many. While support acts like Overjoyed, Inhaler, and The Kooks braved the Athenian heat, Green Day was the undeniable protagonist.
The anticipation reached a fever pitch at 9:15 PM as “Bohemian Rhapsody” blasted from the speakers, followed by The Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop,” setting the stage for the main event.
Green Day wasted no time, launching into their set with the title track from American Idiot. A colossal “heart grenade,” the band’s iconic American Idiot grenade variation, inflated behind them, symbolizing their tribute to the album, from which they performed six tracks.
Demonstrating their awareness of changing times, Armstrong even updated a lyric to “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.” They also paid homage to “Dookie” with a flying zeppelin that soared over the crowd, dropping souvenir miniatures throughout the night.
For ninety minutes, Armstrong commanded the stage with relentless energy, Durnt playfully stuck out his tongue at the audience, and Cool maintained his ever-cartoonish figure behind the drums.
Their dynamic performance belied their 53 years, showcasing complete professionalism and an uncanny ability to still connect with the audience. Armstrong’s gift for showmanship ensured no one left disappointed, from the hardcore fans to those who came for hits such as “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
He joked about the massive Greek turnout making them “Greek Day” and draped a Greek flag around his neck during “Jesus of Suburbia.”
