Giannis Antetokounmpo shared his dream on Tuesday of returning to Athens and playing once again for the basketball team where his illustrious career took off as a teenager.
Together with his brothers, he shared personal experiences and insights on overcoming adversity at a heartfelt event—held under the auspices of the Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation—at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, a private international philanthropic organization in the Athens metropolitan area.
During the discussion, Giannis Antetokounmpo spoke not only about his basketball career but also his long-term vision, expressing a strong desire to return to his roots in Athens.
A homecoming dream for Giannis Antetokounmpo: Filathlitikos and Athens
Giannis, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar, emphasized his deep connection to Athens, stating, “I can’t wait when every season ends to return to my home. I feel comfortable here. When I retire, I plan to stay here. Always in Athens. Athens is my home.”
Perhaps the most resonant part of his talk was his aspiration to rejoin his brothers at Filathlitikos, the Athens club where he first played as a teenager. “We can go back and play for Filathlitikos, one or two seasons, promote it to the first division,” Giannis declared, envisioning a future in which he could contribute directly to the club that shaped his early career.
Filathlitikos BC, officially known as Filathlitikos Omilos Zografou, is a basketball club based in Zografou, a suburb of Athens. While not a global household name, for basketball enthusiasts in Greece, it is recognized as the crucial stepping stone for the Antetokounmpo brothers, particularly Giannis.
Established in 1986, Filathlitikos primarily operates as a youth development club, focusing on nurturing young talent. It was here, in the humble gyms of Zografou, that Giannis, along with his brothers Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex, honed their skills and began attracting attention.
Giannis joined the club’s youth system around 2007 and made his senior team debut in 2012, competing in Greece’s third-tier league, the Greek C Basket League. His rapid ascent and unique athleticism quickly made him a standout, leading to his eventual entry into the NBA.

Giannis, who turned 30 in December, shared a poignant reflection on their previous meeting: “We haven’t seen each other since 2021, since that dinner by the sea. That dinner was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I felt your killer instinct. That’s where I understood why you became who you became.”
This exchange underscored the mutual respect between two generations of Greek basketball greatness, with Giannis recognizing the competitive fire that defined Galis’ legendary career.
