Maya DNA From Copán Links Past Civilizations to Present-Day Communities

A new DNA study is shedding light on the ancient city of Copán’s long and complex history, revealing genetic links between its ancient residents and modern Maya communities in Mexico.

The research, published in Current Biology, analyzed the genomes of seven individuals buried in Copán. Among them were a possible royal figure and an individual believed to have been a sacrificial offering.

The results indicate strong genetic ties between ancient Copán residents, late archaic populations, later Maya groups, and contemporary Maya peoples.

Early settlers and Copán’s rise

The earliest signs of human life in Copán date back to the Early Preclassic period to approximately 1000 BC, when small farming communities began settling the area. Over time, the settlement expanded.

By around 300 to 400 AD, during the early Classic period, Copán had developed monumental buildings and carved stone inscriptions that reflected its growing status in the Maya world.

In 426 or 427 AD, a major political shift took place when a man named K’inich Yax K’uk’ Mo’ arrived from another region and founded a royal dynasty. This line of kings ruled Copán for nearly four centuries.

During this time, the city became a key political and ceremonial hub, home to both elite rulers and common citizens.

Blending of cultures supported by genetic data

A long-standing theory suggests that Maya elites arrived in Copán and merged with the people already living there.

While archaeological and written records have supported this view, scientists now say genetic evidence provides clearer proof. By studying ancient DNA, researchers can better trace how populations moved and blended.

The study analyzed skull bones from 16 individuals uncovered by two archaeological efforts in Copán. DNA was successfully extracted from seven of them. Most had no signs of wealth, but one individual, buried in a richly adorned tomb, was likely part of the royal family. Another, buried nearby with no offerings, is believed to have been a sacrificial victim.

Genetic continuity and signs of migration

The DNA showed that genetic continuity in the Maya region stretches back to thousands of years ago. The results also revealed a small degree of genetic mixing—around 6 percent—with populations from the highlands of Mexico during the early to middle Classic period. This points to migration and cultural integration during Copán’s height.

A population decline but not disappearance

The study also confirmed a significant population decline around 1,200 years ago. This drop aligns with a known period of drought and political unrest across the Maya region.

However, the genetic record suggests that the people did not disappear. Instead, local ancestry endured and continues in present-day Maya communities.

Researchers say the Maya DNA helps deepen the understanding of Copán, not just as an ancient city that once flourished but as part of a living cultural lineage that exists to this day.
