Greece’s far-right nationalist party Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) has sent a letter to the European Parliament requesting that it invites American tech billionaire Elon Musk to address its members.
In the letter, addressed to Robert Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, Greek Solution Member of Parliament Emmanouil Fragos says that “As part of our efforts to host distinguished and symbolically significant guests, we propose extending an invitation to Elon Musk to address a plenary session.”
He adds that “We recognize the motivations that have driven his groundbreaking achievements, his visionary perspective on global progress, and his insights that could make the EU a hub of creativity and technological advancement, again.”
Fragos posted the letter on his profile on X, which is owned by Musk, on Monday. Recently, Musk has launched a series of attacks on some of America’s longest-standing allies on the other side of the Atlantic while supporting far-right parties. This has been inflaming resentment among European leaders towards the tech titan.
Greek Solution is led by populist Kyriakos Velopoulos, a man who came to the forefront several years ago as a hardcore Greek Orthodox patriot selling religious paraphernalia and miracle ointments on late-night television. He has even claimed that he had in his possession letters written by Jesus Christ. Velopoulos has maintained a faithful audience that put him in the Greek Parliament, first with the now-defunct People’s Orthodox Alert and later leading his own party, which he created in 2016.
Elon Musk facing mounting outrage across Europe
Elon Musk, a close friend and ally of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump tapped for a government job in the upcoming administration, has been sparking mounting outrage among European leaders for meddling in European politics.
The world’s richest man has been accused of promoting his personal foreign agenda promoting far-right parties in Europe, which have been rising in popularity in recent years. His recent attacks on elected, European officials include a stream of social media posts, ranging from accusing the British prime minister of being complicit in rape, to denouncing judges in Italy, slamming the European Commission and hosting German far-right leader Alice Weidel in a livestream on X, just weeks before the German elections.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has been targeted by Musk for weeks, warned the SpaceX owner had “crossed a line.” French President Emmanuel Macron accused Musk of fueling a new “international reactionary movement” and intervening in elections. And the German government has already criticized the multi-billionaire for backing the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD), whose leader Musk will be hosting in an X livestream.
The pressure now mounts on the European Commission. Europe’s Digital Services Act, which polices social media platforms like X, could be used as a tool to try and reign in the tech billionaire. The European Commission is in charge of enforcing Europe’s new digital rulebook, which, in cases of violations, threatens massive fines or even temporary blocks.
