Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have officially settled their divorce after more than eight years of contentious legal battles. Both parties signed the agreement on Dec. 30, 2024, marking the end of one of Hollywood’s most publicized breakups.

Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, described the resolution as a relief for his client. “She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family,” Simon said in a statement.

He added, “Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”

A decade-long relationship ends in court

Once one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples, Jolie and Pitt spent nearly a decade together before marrying in 2014. During their relationship, they became parents to six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.

The divorce became a lengthy legal saga due to disputes over child custody, property, and business interests. Jolie initially requested sole physical custody of their children, then aged 8 to 15, while Pitt sought joint custody. The custody battle included a private trial and allegations of misconduct.

In 2019, the court officially ended their marriage by granting a dissolution of marital status. However, disputes over other matters, including property, continued to prolong the legal proceedings.

Allegations of abuse on a 2016 private flight

A key turning point in the divorce was an incident aboard a private plane in 2016. Jolie accused Pitt of physical and verbal abuse toward her and their children during a flight from France to the United States.

Details emerged in 2022 when a heavily redacted FBI report surfaced. Jolie alleged that Pitt assaulted her and shouted at the children. The FBI investigated the incident but did not charge Pitt. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Legal battle over French winery

In addition to custody issues, the couple has been embroiled in a legal dispute over Château Miraval, a French winery where they were married. Jolie sold her stake in the property in 2021, a move Pitt has since challenged as unlawful.

The winery has become a focal point of their ongoing legal battles, with Pitt arguing the sale violated their agreement.

Moving Forward

In a 2020 interview, Jolie reflected on her decision to separate, saying it was for the “wellbeing” of her family. “It was the right decision,” she said. “I continue to focus on their healing. They are six very brave, very strong young people.”

Although the divorce is now finalized, some legal disputes, including the winery case, remain unresolved.
