Muddy footprints discovered alongside Lake Turkana, Kenya reveal two ancient hominin species were once neighbors 1.5 million years ago.
According to paleontologist Louise Leakey, a co-author of the study published on Thursday, November 28 in the journal Science, the ancient footprints were likely made hours or days apart from each other. This provides a one-of-a-kind snapshot of what early hominin life could have looked like.
Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei were already known to have lived at around the same time in the Turkana basin, but this is the first piece of evidence that suggests these two early hominin groups interacted and coexisted. This is because fossil dating is not an exact science and provides year ranges that can sometimes be thousands of years in length.

The footprints of the two ancient hominin species found in Kenya mark a revolutionary discovery as it answers many questions scientists have had for decades. It highlights the diverse adaptations to bipedalism, illustrating multiple evolutionary paths toward upright walking among early hominins.
“This is the first direct snapshot of the two species together on the same immediate landscape,” said Dr Kevin Hatala, the primary author of the study.
In the study, the authors mentioned how they were looking at footprints from other creatures before discovering that the footprints of Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei were also there. They first noticed the footprints of Paranthropus boisei, observing that this hominin was walking at a relatively fast pace with long strides.

Scientists noticed the impressions were different by the foot anatomy and the landing point of the foot. Paranthropus boisei is not an ancestor of Homo sapiens but exists in a separate branch of the human family tree.
“There are aspects of their big toe anatomy, in particular, that seem consistent with the patterns that we see in the footprints,” said Hatala.
Then the scientists also noticed the familiar strides of Homo erectus near to Paranthropus boisei’s prints. The fact that these two species were found to live so close together raises a new set of questions for scientists peering through the lens of ancient history to precisely map and educate the world on our ancestors’ existence.
“I would expect the two species would have been aware of each other’s existence on that landscape, and they probably would have recognized each other as being ‘different’,” said Hatala. “This raises lots of fascinating questions about how they would have interacted, and we don’t have all of those answers yet.”
The footprints firmly place both hominins in the same timeline and same region in a way fossils could not. The discovery could open the doors to more revelations on where, when, and how ancient hominin species co-existed.
