Google Shopping is getting an AI makeover. The changes will roll out in the U.S. over the next few weeks. Google has paired 45 billion listings with the Gemini AI model to create a brand-new user experience. The company says that the newly upgraded Google Shopping tab will help consumers find the products they are looking for more easily and faster, giving them in-depth suggestions based on their searches.
The new AI-powered Google Shopping in action
In an example on Google’s blog, The Keyword, Sean Scott, vice president and general manager of Consumer Shopping at Google, said:
“A search for ‘Men’s winter jacket for Seattle’ will provide an AI brief with the most important things you should know before investing in a new coat for this climate. We’ll show products recommended by sources from across the web, and an explanation of why they’re a fit for your needs.”
Scott stated that there would be no more and no less than three suggestions per category of recommendations, as they found any more or less to be underwhelming or overwhelming.
The way the new Google Shopping will work is that the first three suggestions will be the top recommendations Gemini AI can provide based on the user’s search. From there, consumers can scroll down almost indefinitely for more varied and specific recommendations. As they go through their recommendations, they can also access reviews and be given nearby shopping locations via Google Maps in case they wish to buy the product in person.
Artificial intelligence will allow consumers using Google Shopping to ensure they are ordering the right product, explaining why that product has been suggested. There will also be filters for size so that consumers only get suggested products in their size. There will be a virtual try-on feature using generative AI and augmented reality to allow people to “try products on” from home.
“Imagine a store based just on your interest,” said Scott. “That’s what we set out to create.”
The new Google Shopping will also help bargain shoppers snag the best deals possible, having a specific “deals” function just for their own ease.
“We know shoppers always want low prices, and the new Google Shopping not only includes deal-finding tools like price comparison, price insights and price tracking throughout, but also a new dedicated and personalized deals page where you can browse deals for you—just click the ‘Deals’ link at the top of your page to explore,” wrote Scott in the blog.
