NBA Star Kyrie Irving was spotted vacationing on Crete, Greece after undergoing surgery to repair a broken left hand.
The Dallas Mavericks guard was seen with family on his way to the well-known Canale restaurant in the town of Chania.
The 32-year-old American, who was photographed with the owner Maximos Petrochilos and the manager Giorgos Chlorakis, tasted Cretan dishes and was so excited by the flavors and service that he left a €500 tip for the staff, according to a report from Mykonoslive.tv.
Irving suffered an injury to his hand while training earlier this month, and a timetable for his return is to be determined. As per Adrian Wojnarowski, the team is hopeful he’ll be fully back on board in training camp.
Kyrie Irving’s NBA season
Irving and the Mavericks are coming off a trip to the NBA Finals. This will be their first since 2011, when Dirk Nowitzki led them to the only title in franchise history, during which they were defeated by the Boston Celtics in five games.
CBS reports that in 58 games last season, his first full one with the Mavericks, Irving averaged 25.6 points, five rebounds, and 5.2 assists on 49.7/41.1/90.5 shooting splits. He was just a few shots away from joining Larry Bird, Steve Nash, and Kevin Durant as the only players with multiple 50/40/90 seasons.
Despite putting up incredible numbers yet again, Irving missed out on a ninth All-Star appearance due to injuries, most notably a heel contusion that kept him out for 12 games in December. Subsequent issues then prevented him from reaching the new 65-game threshold for major awards, which eliminated him from All-NBA consideration, as per CBS.
While Irving did not earn his usual accolades, this was arguably the best he has played in a number of years, especially in the playoff run to the finals. He teamed up so superbly with Luka Doncic that some analysts wondered if they were the best offensive backcourt ever.
Irving’s controversial views
Kyrie Irving has undoubtedly become one of the most polarizing figures in the NBA.
While his exceptional basketball talent is undeniable, his controversial views and actions have often overshadowed his on-court performances.
His promotion of an antisemitic film sparked significant backlash, leading to a suspension from the NBA and damage to his reputation. Irving’s refusal to comply with New York City’s vaccine mandate led to a prolonged absence from the Brooklyn Nets.
In addition, Irving’s public endorsement of the Flat Earth theory, a scientifically debunked concept, added to his controversial image. All these incidents have raised questions about Irving’s judgment and the impact of his words and actions on the broader community.
