Elon Musk said on X (formerly known as Twitter) that he will endorse Donald Trump for the November Presidential election in the US.
This came after the assassination attempt against Donald Trump that took place during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
”I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery” Musk said as he quoted a video that showed the moment gunshots were heard during Trump’s rally.
In a second post (tweet) that Musk uploaded a few minutes after the first one, he said that Trump was as tough as Roosevelt. ”Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt.” the billionaire said.
This endorsement comes as no surprise to those who follow Musk’s public statements. He has been a critic of the Democratic party and President Biden alike and has expressed right-wing arguments that align with Trump’s rhetoric.
Musk – Trump love relationship not new
Musk has been an open advocate and admirer of Donald Trump’s presidency and of his style for years. Earlier this summer, Trump had discussed a potential White House advisory role for Musk if he is reelected in November.
This was revealed by a report published by The Wall Street Journal.
The publication cited sources that are familiar with their discussions. It also reported that Trump and Musk have held several phone conversations since a meeting in March at the Palm Beach, Florida, home of billionaire Nelson Peltz.
According to the same report, Trump hasn’t made any official offer yet, however, a role could give Musk input on policies such as border security and the economy, the Journal said in late May.
Musk has already pledged that he will not donate any money to either major candidate for president, neither Trump nor Joe Biden. Nonetheless, the report added that the owner of X, formerly Twitter, plans to use his social media power to persuade others in elite business and technology circles not to support Biden.
After today’s public endorsement of Trump by Musk, all this could of course change. Musk could actually provide financial assistance to the Trump campaign and make a deal, either public or in private, about a potential future role in the Trump administration, if the former President wins the race.
The tumultuous past
The two men have had a difficult relationship in the past, despite the recent rapprochement. Musk served on a business council during the presidency of Donald Trump but left after the former President of the US decided to withdraw the country from the landmark Paris climate agreement. Trump then called the Tesla CEO a “bullshit artist”.
The former president suggested to CNBC in March that the pair had overcome those frustrations, saying he had been “friendly” with Musk over the years.
”I’ve helped him when I was president,” Trump said at the time. ”I helped him. I’ve liked him.”
