Amid a spate of tourists going missing on Greek islands, a Dutch tourist who was reported missing on Sunday, June 9th while hiking on the island of Samos has still not been found.
Dutch tourist missing on Samos
The Dutch tourist, according to Samosvoice, has been missing since 2 pm on Sunday. He reportedly disappeared while hiking between the areas of Limnionas and Klima, southwest of the island.
Greek police said the tourist lost his orientation on a path in the area of Limnionas. It was reported that the last sign he was alive was at 2 pm in the same area. The investigation has been expanded, with Samosvoice reporting that since yesterday, Tuesday, June 11th, a rescue boat has been scanning the coastline, with the assistance of a helicopter. In addition, drones have been used, along with a rescue dog.
Thus far, there have been no signs of the Dutch tourist on Samos. It is believed he may have fallen into the sea. According to a statement from the head of the Samos police department, the investigations, based on protocol, will be completed on Wednesday night.
Yesterday, a 59-year-old retired American police officer who came to vacation on the island of Amorgos, Greece was reported missing.
According to some sources, the American tourist, a retired police officer, went for a hike on a challenging path on Amorgos but has not returned or been seen since. The man reportedly had his cell phone with him but has not answered it or been seen since yesterday evening, Tuesday, June 11th.
The disappearance of the 59-year-old was reported to the Amorgos Police Station by a friend who was vacationing with him on the island. The friend told the police the retired officer began hiking yesterday morning from Aegiali following a marked path. His final destination was to be Katapola Amorgos. The estimated journey time for this trek is around four hours and five minutes.
At roughly 3:20 pm, the US tourist had still not arrived in Katapola. This caused his friend to become concerned, and he began attempting to contact him but received no answer. In fact, the retired policeman had two mobile phones with him—one with a French number and one with a US number. His last contact was reportedly with his sister. He sent her a photo of the trail sign.
Investigations were conducted immediately by all police officers on Amorgos with the assistance of firemen and volunteer rescuers. A request was sent to locate the signal of the cell phones.
Today, a team of police officers from Naxos will assist with investigations in the hope of finding the American on Amorgos.
Dr. Michael Mosley’s disappearance and death
The news of the two other tourists comes just days after the disappearance (and what later turned out to be death) of Dr. Michael Mosley, a TV doctor and celebrity in the UK. Mosley’s body was located on the Greek island of Symi just days after he was reported missing.
His body was spotted by Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, the mayor of Symi, and a group of journalists who were combing the area of Agia Marina on a boat. He was discovered in a rocky area of Agia Marina north of the town of Pedi, where he was last seen on a CCTV video.
