At the upcoming WWDC 2024 event, Apple plans to share its journey with AI technology. Unlike flashy demos from other tech giants like Google or Microsoft, Apple might focus on simpler AI tools such as transcribing voice notes or creating emojis automatically.

There’s a rumor that Apple might also reveal a partnership with OpenAI. Mark Gurman’s “Power On” newsletter for Bloomberg on May 26, 2024 hints at these developments.

Recent rumors suggest Apple is gearing up to more extensively integrate chatbots into its operating systems. OpenAI’s ChatGPT appears to be at the forefront of this integration. However, negotiations with Google to incorporate Gemini are still underway, as noted by Gurman.

Additionally, Apple is rumored to be in discussions with Anthropic. These talks began before OpenAI’s ongoing Scarlett Johansson controversy but highlight Apple’s interest in securing multiple iPhone chatbot deals.

Beyond potential partnerships, Apple’s AI strategy seems geared toward practicality, as reported by The Verge.

Apple to introduce “smart recap” feature for missed calls, notifications, and more

Apple is rumored to unveil a significant enhancement called the “smart recap” feature, as reported by Gurman. This feature is expected to provide summaries of missed texts, notifications, and various types of media like web pages, news articles, and documents.

Such a feature could be especially useful for managing iOS notifications, which can often feel overwhelming and hard to manage. Interestingly, this concept bears a resemblance to Microsoft’s Recall feature, which allows users to review their recent computer activities.

Gurman also shared that the Voice Memo app might receive a significant upgrade with AI-generated transcripts. This enhancement could prove invaluable for tasks like referencing interview recordings.

Additionally, it could be beneficial for students who record their lessons for future review. Apple devices already offer similar features, such as auto-generated voicemail transcripts and system-wide captions for various types of media like videos, audio, and conversations.

Reportedly, Apple plans to make improvements in on-device Spotlight search, internet searches through Safari, and writing suggestions for emails and texts.

Additionally, the company may introduce AI-driven capabilities to retouch photos and generate emojis in real-time based on text content, although such features have historically posed challenges for tech companies.

More natural-sounding voice for Siri

Apple might also showcase an upgraded, more natural-sounding voice for Siri, leveraging its own extensive language models. Furthermore, Siri functionality on the Apple Watch could see improvements.

While Apple aims to perform these tasks locally on its devices whenever possible, more complex tasks may be offloaded to Apple’s M2 Ultra-based servers.

Most of these new on-device AI features are expected to be available on devices released within the past year or so, according to Gurman.
