Arctic Ice, a startup from Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, is making waves in Dubai by delivering ancient ice to high-end bars. Of course, there is no lack of ice in the city, but it is a truly unique, sought-after product at exclusive bars.

The company is sourcing 100,000-year-old ice from Arctic glaciers and sending it overseas for a premium. This ancient ice, compressed over millennia, stands out because it lacks bubbles and takes its time melting compared to the regular ice to which one is accustomed.

The aim is to provide a more lavish experience at Dubai’s top-notch cocktail bars, ensuring that drinks stay undiluted for longer, as reported by Daily Mail.

Glacier ice shipped to Dubai ‘purest in the world’ without any pollutants

The company proudly labels its product as the “purest ice in the world,” sourced exclusively from the pristine glaciers of Greenland.

The ice is “sourced directly from the natural glaciers in the Arctic which have been in a frozen state for more than 100,000 years,” says the company’s website.

They emphasize that these ice sheets have remained untouched by soils or pollutants from human activities. This distinction, they claim, makes the glacier ice the cleanest on Earth.

Malik V Rasmussen, co-founder of Arctic Ice, expressed his desire to discover an additional income stream for Greenland, which remains under the Kingdom of Denmark. Rasmussen told The Guardian, “In Greenland, we make all our money from fish and from tourism.”

He added, “For a long time, I have wanted to find something else that we can profit from.”

Arctic Ice uses a crane attached to a boat to retrieve ice

Arctic Ice uses a boat equipped with a crane to retrieve its premium ice from Nuup Kangerlua, the fjord surrounding Greenland’s capital, Nuuk. Fjords are elongated sea inlets, often frequented by tourists on cruises.

The Arctic Ice team carefully selects ice that hasn’t come into contact with either the bottom or top of the glacier, making it purer but trickier to identify in the water.

This specific ice is then placed in large plastic crates and transported back to Nuuk. From there, it is loaded into refrigerated shipping containers for the journey to Denmark, as reported by The Guardian.

Once in Denmark, the refrigerated containers are then transferred onto another ship bound for Dubai, where a local distributor named Natural Ice sells the ice to various bars.

Despite only recently sending out their initial shipment of twenty metric tons, Arctic Ice has faced significant backlash for commercializing a valuable element of the natural world.

Moreover, the criticism of shipping glacier ice to cocktail bars, including social media comments and private messages, has escalated to the point of what the co-founder describes as “verging on death threats.”
