Severe Weather in Greece Causes Extensive Damage Across the Nation

Severe weather conditions have been wreaking chaos in various parts of Greece since the early hours of Saturday. The storm, characterized by gale-force winds and heavy rains, led to a number of problems including, but not limited to, falling trees, landslides, road blockades and evacuations of villages.

Xanthi Hit by Tornado

An intense storm hit the city of Xanthi in northeastern Greece, resulting in a tornado that overturned parked vehicles and tore off the roofs of several houses. The strong winds also caused dozens of trees to fall in various parts of the city, necessitating the intervention of the fire department to manage the numerous incidents and assess the material damage.

Alexandroupolis, Severe Weather Damaged a School

In Alexandroupolis, the capital of Evros regional unit, the bad weather caused damage to a primary school, raising concerns among parents and the local community. The Parents’ Association addressed a letter to the mayor expressing their discontent over the situation.

Aigialeia, Evacuation of People

The authorities initiated a precautionary evacuation of Viliviniotika village in the municipality of Aigialeia. This measure aimed to safeguard residents from potential landslides caused by the severe weather conditions.

Greek media, citing police, reported that seventeen residents of the village would be relocated to a hotel in the Eleonas area.

Corfu

Corfu island faced power outages and minor disturbances due to the storm, with a fire breaking out in a PPC pillar in Halikounas. A fallen tree was also reported in Skripero, although the incident did not result in any casualties.

Fthiotida

In the Fthiotida regional unit, boats have capsized and washed ashore. The strong winds and storm also damaged the beach shops’ facilities significantly.

Ioannina, Severe Weather Led to Landslides

The Prefecture of Ioannina grappled with multiple landslides, affecting the mountainous provincial network and leading to disruptions in traffic flow. Instances of landslides were reported in Tzoumerka, Konitsa, and Pogoni.

Patras

Strong winds and rainfall in Patras caused trees to uproot in the Aktaios area. The Fire Department and the Police responded to manage the situation and ensure public safety.

Florina – Kastoria Road Partly Collapsed Due to Storm

A section of the FlorinaKastoria road collapsed, nearby the Pisoderi village. Authorities promptly placed signs to divert traffic from the affected area, emphasizing the need for caution and vigilance among drivers navigating the region.

Emergency Report Regarding Sever Weather in Greece

An emergency weather report issued by the National Weather Service (EMY) this afternoon further highlights the expectation of heavy rain and storms in several regions at various times. These include central Macedonia, eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the north-eastern Aegean, Epirus, western Sterea and Thessaly. The report also outlines that the event expected to gradually subside and weaken in most areas.

A noticeable improvement in the weather is expected on Sunday with clear skies and reduced winds across the country. Deteriorating weather conditions are expected to help mitigate various problems caused by the storm.
