Arabic-Speaking Man Claims Responsibility for Deadly Attack in Brussels

Two Swedes were shot dead in Brussels on Monday evening with the suspect still at large, reported Belgian public broadcaster VRT. The perpetrator fled the scene and is still on the loose. However, a video of an Arabic-speaking man claiming responsibility for the attack in the name of Allah (God) has gone viral on social media.

A third victim of the shooting was injured and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, Swedish media report. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and the incident occurred as Belgium hosted Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

The city’s mayor, Philip Close, made a statement, confirming the deployment of police officers on the streets to ensure the safety of the public. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo expressed his condolences, condemning the attack as a cowardly act. He called on Brussels residents to be vigilant.

According to reports, two of the victims were Swedish citizens. The Euro 2024 qualifying football match between Belgium and Sweden taking place in the city was immediately stopped, as confirmed by UEFA.

Attacker’s Identity and Situation in Brussels

The attacker, who fled the crime scene, is now at large and Brussels has raised its terror alert to its highest level. A video has gone viral on social media showing an Arabic-speaking man claiming responsibility for the attack in the name of Allah (God). However, authorities have yet to verify the authenticity of the video and identity of the perpetrator.

The Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuw said the shooter wore a fluorescent orange jacket. Several media outlets broadcast amateur videos displaying a man firing multiple shots near a station using a large firearm.

Following the shooting on the Boulevard d’Ypres, Belgian federal prosecutors opened a terrorism investigation. Emergency services have blocked off the area and are examining evidences.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity during a speech in Albania. He recognized the incident as yet another “Islamist terrorist attack.”

Turkey was recently rocked by yet another terrorist attack. A terrorist attack in Ankara left two policemen injured. Two terrorists detonated a device in Kizilay, a business area of Ankara. One of the offenders blew himself up, while the other was neutralized, according to Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

The two terrorists planted a bomb in front of the General Directorate of Security in the Turkish capital of Ankara.
