John Calamos Sr., Chairman and Global CIO of Calamos Investments expressed his concern about government policy in the US and weighed in on the global debate concerning Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Speaking to Greek Reporter, Calamos said that he is a “little concerned” about the path the US is currently going.

He noted the debate going on in the US and beyond about equality. “If you want to make everyone equal, you would make them equally poor.

“We want to make sure we have the motivation for people to succeed, to innovate and be creative…The government is not going to do that for us. The government is a referee, not a creator,” he stressed.

He added that the idea that the government will take care of everything is wrong. “It’s all about freedom of choice, and that’s what made America great in the past and that’s what will keep America great going forward.”

The founder of Calamos Investments is a proud Greek-American who has lent his expertise to both nations. He is among the top philanthropists in the entire Greek-American community and in 2019, he was honored by The Washington Oxi Day Foundation for his heroic service to the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

“The US is the greatest country in the world because of its innovation. Only the US can find such solutions for humanity and we do not want that to go away,” he told Greek Reporter.

John Calamos: Ancient Greece rewarded freedom and innovation

Calamos founded Calamos Investments in 1977, a company that manages $35 billion in assets on behalf of institutions and individual investors.

“We want to make sure that future generations with ideas and creativity can come here in America to pursue the American dream,” he said.

Calamos noted that the values of Ancient Greece that rewarded freedom and innovation are the cornerstones of modern Western liberal societies.

“Western civilization is about innovation and creativity in the economy and society, and that’s what America is all about.”

The Greek-American entrepreneur said that AI is just the next generation of technology. “Think of AI as a way to increase productivity and allow companies to produce cheaper products.”

As long-serving chairman of the board of trustees in the Chicago-based National Hellenic Museum, Calamos has overseen its growth into becoming a primary Greek-American institution.

The Museum is dedicated to connecting generations to the legacy of Greek culture and history and the Greek story in America. It preserves and portrays Greek history and the Hellenic legacy, sparking inquiry and discussion about the broader issues in our lives and communities through educational classes, exhibitions, and programs.
