On Thursday, tourists in Egypt watched in horror as a Russian man was eaten by a shark just meters away from the beach.

According to Russian media reports, the incident occurred on the beach of the Dream Beach Hotel in Hurghada, a popular resort in Egypt. The incident was caught on camera and subsequently shared on social media.

The victim of the shark attack in Egypt was identified by the Russian consul general as V. Popov. In the video, Popov can be seen struggling in the water to fend off the shark during his final moments.

“A Russian died as a result of the shark attack,” said Viktor Voropayev, Russia’s consul-general in Hurghada to the media.

According to Voropayev, the victim was not a tourist but had been living in Egypt for several months before the shark attack took his life. He was named V. Popov by the consul-general and identified as Vladimir Popov by the Russian media. He was reportedly 23 years old.

The victim’s girlfriend was reportedly also seen swimming in the water but was able to escape to the beach.

According to reports, tourists who visit the resort are currently prohibited from accessing the water, and those who observed the horrifying incident were deeply shocked. A coastal area spanning 74 kilometers (46 miles) will remain inaccessible until Sunday.

The shark is reportedly being kept in a laboratory in Egypt where its remains are being studied for clues as to why it conducted the attack.

Footage and eyewitness accounts

Footage of the incident later emerged on social media. It shows Popov struggling in the water against the shark, whose fins can be seen popping above the water at certain moments. Onlookers on the beach can be heard screaming in the background.

“‘It’s eating his remains now,” one witness can be heard exclaiming in Russian during the video.

According to eyewitnesses, rescue personnel made efforts to save Popov; however, by the time they arrived at the scene, the shark had already killed him.

“It happened in a second. Rescuers reacted very quickly. For some reason, I immediately felt that it was a shark. I immediately jumped up and started shouting: ‘Sharks, sharks! Save yourself!’ Nobody understood yet,” one witness told Russia’s REN-TV during an interview.

Fatal shark attack incidents are relatively rare in Egypt and elsewhere in the world. Last year, an Austrian holidaymaker in Egypt was also attacked and killed by a shark.
