World leaders, activists and executives participated in the 2023 Concordia Americas Summit held in Miami on March 9 and 10 to discuss Latin America’s most pressing issues and seek solutions.

The Summit took place at the University of Miam,i which in 2022 announced a three-year partnership with Concordia to host the Concordia Americas Summit until 2025, the centennial of the university.

Among the top speakers were United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai; Iván Duque Marquez, former president of Colombia; Former President of Uruguay, Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera; Alejandro Eduardo Giammattei Falla, president of Guatemala; Chan Santokhi, president of Surinam; Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava; and Anna Wellenstein, regional director, Latin America and the Caribbean  branches of the World Bank.

In her remarks, Tai highlighted how the Biden Administration’s trade agenda promotes resilience and inclusive economic growth throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Ambassador Tai also emphasized the Administration’s commitment to partnering with countries in our hemisphere to deepen trade and economic ties and to ensure that the benefits of trade are shared by all our people.

Senator Rick Scott spoke about the threats to freedom and democracy in Latin America due to the growing influence of oppressive regimes, like Communist China, Russia and Iran, in the Western Hemisphere.

Senator Scott has been a staunch advocate for freedom-loving people across Latin America, and continues fighting to bring awareness of the serious issues that are threatening economic stability and prosperity in the region.

“Misinformation can do a lot of damage because it can forcefully form the opinion of the citizens,” Former President of Uruguay, Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera said at the Summit.

Former President of Bolivia Tuto Quiroga emphasized that “the fight in Latin America is not left versus right, it is democracy versus autocracy.”

Americas Summit is Concordia’s longest-standing regional initiative

The summit is “our longest-standing regional initiative, born in Miami back in 2016,” said Matthew Swift, co-founder and CEO of Concordia.

“We are honored to continue our work to highlight the most pressing issues facing the Western Hemisphere,” he said. “The region needs to be more interconnected and aligned.”

Founded in 2011 by Swift and Nicholas M. Logothetis, a member of the Greek diaspora, Concordia is a top leadership organization that analyzes and provides solutions for current issues by bringing together world leaders, activists and business executives.

More than a decade later, the Concordia Annual Summit in New York has become one of the most important events to run in parallel to the UN general assembly, and the organization is now facilitating impactful year-round events around the globe.

The 2022 Concordia Annual Summit featured closing remarks by the Rt. Hon. Sir Tony Blair and the First Lady of the United States, Jill Biden.

The Summit, which is held in parallel with the UN General Assembly, convened the top movers and shakers of today’s world to spark dialogue, promote collaboration, and collectively pave the way toward a more equitable, sustainable future.
